Chemical sampling for water quality

Chemical sampling for water quality

Equipment:

  • Test strips for ammonia, nitrate, phosphate & pH
  • Temperature probe
  • Dissolved oxygen probe [if you have one]
  • Sample bottle with extendable pole – there is no need to enter the water to collect a water sample
  • Gloves – nitrile or similar

Instructions:

  • With care collect a sample of water from your river.
  • Take the temperature sample first and then following test kit instruction sample for the remaining factors.
  • Enter each value on the Chemical Testing page. [Please note if you are unable to record Dissolved oxygen this will not affect the River Health score]. Press submit
  • Your data will be stored and shared with a growing network of River Health Checkers to protect our rivers and their wildlife from pollution and harm.

Ammonia

Equipment:

  • Ammonia testing equipment

There are several different types of equipment on the market to test Ammonia levels in water.

Please read and follow the instructions given with your chosen equipment carefully.

Nitrate

  • Nitrate testing equipment

There are several different types of equipment on the market to test the Nitrate levels in water.

Please read and follow the instructions given with your chosen equipment carefully.

Phosphate

  • Phosphate testing equipment

There are several different types of equipment on the market to test the Phosphate levels in water.

Please read and follow the instructions given with your chosen equipment carefully.

Temperature

  • Thermometer

Place thermometer either in sample pot avoiding contact with warm or cold objects, take more than one measurement to get a rough average for your river location, be aware trees shading in slow flows will reduce temperature values whereas slack water in full sun will be above average.

pH

Equipment:

  • pH testing equipment

There are several different types of pH tests from strips to electronic devices choose what you can afford. Please read and follow the instructions given with your chosen pH testing kit carefully.

Turbidity

Equipment:

  • Turbidity testing colour chart

Dissolved Oxygen

Equipment:

  • Dissolved Oxygen testing equipment

There are several different types of equipment on the market to test the dissolved oxygen in water.

Please read and follow the instructions given with your chosen equipment carefully.
